Issue: We have received feedback from several customers who supply tablets for the purpose of accessing the Swank streaming content. These customers have expressed a desire to limit the functionality of these devices so that they can only be used to view the Swank streaming site.
Resolution: Below are some general recommendations we can provide, but we do encourage you to ask your mobile device management (MDM) support or IT team about the best way to achieve this. Swank can be a part of those conversations as needed as well.
Apple iOS
With MDM:
-
- Use the Single App Mode feature available in most MDM solutions.
- Configure the tablet to open the Swank app or the browser pointing to the Swank URL in Single App Mode.
- This ensures users cannot exit the app or browse elsewhere.
- Utilize Web Content Filtering:
- Whitelist only the Swank URL in Safari or the app being used.
- Block all other web content.
- Use the Single App Mode feature available in most MDM solutions.
Without MDM:
- Use Guided Access:
- Open the Swank site in Safari or a browser.
- Enable Guided Access by triple-clicking the home or side button.
- Restrict all controls except interaction with the browser window.
- Disable the keyboard in Guided Access if entering new URLs is a concern.
- Place a shortcut to the Swank URL on the Home Screen:
- Go to the Swank site in Safari.
- Tap the share button and select "Add to Home Screen."
- This creates a full-screen web app experience without browser UI.
Android
With MDM:
- Use Kiosk Mode in your MDM solution:
- Configure the device to lock into a specific browser or web app.
- Whitelist only the Swank URL and block access to other websites.
- Hide or disable the address bar in the browser.
- Some MDMs allow app pinning and control over app permissions to restrict browsing capabilities.
Without MDM:
- Use Screen Pinning:
- Open the Swank site in Chrome.
- Enable Screen Pinning from device settings (Settings > Security > Screen Pinning).
- Pin Chrome to prevent users from switching apps.
- If needed, lock the keyboard with additional app-specific controls (third-party apps can assist here).
- Install a Custom Launcher or Browser:
- Use a launcher or browser app designed for kiosk mode (e.g., Fully Kiosk Browser).
- Configure the app to open the Swank URL and block all navigation controls.
- This can often be done without MDM.
- Home Screen Shortcut:
- Similar to iOS, create a shortcut to the Swank URL on the Home Screen.
- Use a browser's full-screen mode to limit distractions.
