Summary
In short, the answer is yes with certain caveats:
- Your streaming portal will only support automatic re-direct to one proxy.
- A second proxy is allowed so long as -
- The IP address for that second proxy is whitelisted at your portal.
- The link to that proxy service is created and managed manually.
Primary Proxy
So here is how the streaming portal typically works:
- A visitor arrives at your streaming portal
- The visitor's IP address is checked against the portal's IP whitelist.
-
If the visitor's IP address is in the whitelist -
- Then the visitor is granted access to the portal with no need to authenticate.
-
If the visitor's IP address is not in the whitelist -
- The visitor is directed to the primary proxy automatically.
- If the visitor successfully authenticates at the proxy, then -
- They are directed back to the portal (via the proxy).
- Since the proxy's IP address is whitelisted, the visitor is granted access to the DC portal.
-
If the visitor's IP address is in the whitelist -
Secondary Proxy
In a scenario where a customer is using more than one proxy, the process would work in the exact same way, but with an additional variation.
- Visitors who go directly to the streaming portal work exactly as described above.
- Visitors can go to a manually crafted link on a page hosted by your school or library.
- For example - https://proxy.schoolname.edu/login?url=https://digitalcampus.swankmp.net/tenant1234
- Note this example is not a working link, but is showing that your secondary proxy would make up the first part of the link and the Swank streaming portal URL as the second part.
- Because this manually crafted link specifies the secondary proxy, students will bypass the automatic proxy redirect at the streaming portal itself
- If the user authenticates at this (secondary) proxy successfully, they will be directed back to the streaming portal (via that proxy).
- So long as the proxy's IP address is in the IP range whitelist, the user will be granted access.
- For example - https://proxy.schoolname.edu/login?url=https://digitalcampus.swankmp.net/tenant1234
