If you are experiencing flickering video output from a DMP 8 unit, chances are the unit is probably using an AMD CPU. For example, DMPs built using a Dell R415 have AMD CPUs. This video flickering is usually caused by a power saving feature of the CPU called "C1E" or "*Processor C States." Disabling this power saving feature will almost always resolve the issue.
Attached to this article is a video example of what this symptom looks like. Note that the color bars shown in the video are being inserted by the user's QAM/HD encoder or modulator. The flickering however, is consistent with this issue.
The C1E or Processor C States feature allows the CPU to cycle down to a low-power state when it's not under heavy load. For this reason, the symptom often becomes apparent when the DMP software is in an Intermission state. The CPU cycles down and then quickly back up once again when called upon by the DMP software. This rapid cycling triggers the video flickering.
The solution is to boot the server into the BIOS settings and disable this feature:
- Restart the DMP
- During the boot process, press F2 on the keyboard for the BIOS setup screen
- Navigate to processor settings and disable “C1E" or "Processor C States”
- Save the change and restart the machine
*On Intel based servers, this feature is referred to as "Processor C states" however these symptoms are rarely or never reported on Intel-based DMP units.
